Local Diving - Boynton Reef Sites - Horse ShoeHorse Shoe Reef is named for it's hooked shape. The reef is located North of the Boynton Inlet and is normally dove as the second dive after Casino, which is on the way to Horse Shoe Reef. To get to the Horse Shoe, begin by following the Western edge of the main reef to the North. Along the way you have the choice of diving along the very inside edge of the reef or on a step ledge about 50 feet to the East. While the step ledge is an attractive alternative, you run the risk of missing the Horse Shoe if you stay on the step ledge too long. So, if you are new to this dive, stay on the very inside edge until you get to the Horse Shoe. When you see huge schools of Grunts and Yellow Tails, you will be near the Horse Shoe. When the reef makes a sharp turn to the West and rises up to a height of 10 feet you will be at the Horse Shoe. Standard procedure at the Horse Shoe is to tie your float line to a rock in the sand and spend the rest of the dive exploring the many nooks and crannies at the Horse Shoe. This approach is followed because the Horse Shoe is an extremely interesting place to explore and because the reef ends just North of the Horse Shoe. |
