Local Diving - Boynton Reef Sites - Gulf StreamGulf Stream is named for the community that lies due West of the reef. The reef features alternating 2 to 3 foot high ledges that occasionally jut up to 10 feet high. Another distinguishing feature is the soft sand that bounds the reef to the West. The soft sand is a favorite resting place for Southern Stingrays. Reef Cross Section If you want to see a 10 foot high shore facing ledge and look for Stingrays in the sand, start in Zone 3 and follow the reef North. West <--->East
Or, start your dive in Zone 7 and follow the outside fingers to the North. Here you will find dramatic sand fingers cut into the main reef system. Explore each finger by swimming East and West in the finger. Then head North to the next finger. Expect to see large Jacks, Grouper, and an occasional Jewfish on this route --- particularly in the undercuts in the fingers. |
